Vision plays an important role in a child’s overall health and academic performance. However, eyesight of children is overlooked by many parents. It is highly recommended that a child should have a comprehensive visual examination at three years old, even if there are no obvious visual signs that have been detected or realized.

Some children are too young to complain about uncomfortable vision but parents should take good care of their vision. Undetected and untreated vision problems in children can lead to sight-threatening eye diseases. Some children only receive a brief visual screening from the school or an unprofessional eye doctor. Unlike a comprehensive eye exam, a visual screening just uses simple equipments that can not detect and diagnose a child’s visual problems precisely.

Only eye professionals can make a determination that whether a child is seeing properly, which is necessary to get good academic performance. Good vision is essential in learning, especially for those children in their early school years. Much basic knowledge is earned through visual perception in children. In the learning process, children still gradually gain visual skills, which are necessary to learn effectively.

Visual defect in school-aged children can exert negative impact on them. In some cases, children with poor vision have to struggle to read their books or to see the chalkboard at their seats, which could impose undue stress on their visual system. In consequence, those children may lose interest in certain subject and get lower scores. What’s more serious, some children may develop a lack of self esteem and even become behavioral students in school. Studies have found that attention deficit and hyperactivity in children are mostly caused by vision problems.

There are further visual deficiencies in children who have 20/20 sight. These deficiencies can also affect school performance. They include having problems shifting the eyes from reading to a distance position, losing place while reading, rereading the same line over and over, frequent reversals in numbers or letters and taking 2 hours to complete 20 minutes of homework and so on.

Commonly known as stenopeic glasses, pinhole eyeglasses are made of an opaque sheet of plastic line with pinhole sized openings. Common lenses are clear but these tiny holes on pinhole glasses allow a narrow beam of light to enter the eye. In this way, retinal circle confusion can be reduced and clearer vision can be achieved.

Pinhole glasses can be made of light plastic that also look well. People can use pinhole glasses when doing household chores or watching TV. Actually there are also charming styles of pinhole glasses for outside wear, depending on personal tastes.

Most people can benefit from pinhole glasses in receiving clearer vision during daily activities. Although vision improvement is still unclear, pinhole eyeglasses help individuals see better. For those with presbyopia or myopia, blurry vision is inevitable if they do no wear prescription eyeglasses. Pinhole glasses can also help these people in relieving visual symptoms even without corrective eyeglasses.

Some wearers even experience sharper vision from pinhole glasses than their regular eyeglasses. Pinhole glasses can grant more crisp and clear vision when staring at lines and edges around the objects. Wearers of pinhole glasses have no difficulty watching TV without normal corrective eyeglasses. In some cases, they can read more texts on the TV screen when wearing pinhole glasses only.

What’s more amazing, pinhole glasses are quite inexpensive. Most online stores charge a pair of pinhole glasses for $15 to $20. On eBay, there are even pinhole glasses that cost only $5.

Selecting a pair of children’s eyeglasses always requires more time and skills. Some parents are quite confused by the various types of children’s eyeglasses. Actually, there are many different kinds of spectacle frames that are specially designed for those kids. With this wider selection, parents are more likely to get confused that which frame is exactly suitable for their kids. One requirement is clear that a kid should feel comfortable with his or her glasses.

For those kids, eyeglasses are needed because they have visual problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. Without proper eyeglasses, they can only see distant objects or things close up. And the severity of a specific visual problem determines how long a kid should wear the eyeglasses. With slight refractive errors, some children only need to wear their glasses part time, such as studying. Some others may have to wear their eyeglasses all the time. They remove eyeglasses only before going to sleep. In most cases, the doctor suggests the wearing period for a specific kid. But the selection of eyeglass frame needs opinions from the parent, child and the optician.

Safety should be given the top priority while choosing eyeglasses for children. Children’s eyeglasses always deserve the best fit, which is neither too tight nor too loose. In addition, children always need a pair of eyeglasses with an arm that is long enough to go behind the ear. Spring hinges are particularly necessary for children, because they can protect glasses from easy breakdown.

For children’s eyeglasses, enough space between the lenses and the eyes should be set aside, in order to allow the air to come through smoothly. Eyeglasses for kids can be made from both plastic and wire. In addition, most male kids prefer glasses with a double bridge while a girl always opt for the ones with a single bridge. Another interesting phenomenon is that some children like eyeglasses equipped with styles that are originally designed for their parents.

In the early years of the development of children’s eyeglasses, plastics were most widely used because they are more durable. However, a lot of metal frames are also available for the majority of children. For instance, nickel alloys are commonly used now. In some cases, more than one pair of eyeglasses is needed by a kid.

Physicians at The Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles reported some medical adages or advice, which has been accompanied the growth of many parents. However, some of these adages are incorrect proved by scientists.

Many parents tell their kids that sitting too close to the TV will damage the eyes. This concern actually originated in the 1960s, when many people believed the emerging color TV sets would emit high amounts of X-rays. In fact, modern TV monitors as well as new LCD models do not emit any harmful rays. The truth of this concern is that long-time TV watching or computer work will not damage children’s eyes, but their intellectual development may be affected.

The second misconception about vision in the mind of many parents is that eating lots of carrots is beneficial to a kid’s eyesight. This idea mainly comes from the fact that Vitamin A is helpful in treating night blindness or Vitamin A deficiency. The nutritious ingredient Vitamin A do can be found in carrots. But eating a lot of carrots will not improve one’s eyesight. Lutein is actually proved to be effective in preventing macular degeneration.

A third prejudice is given to contact lenses that many parents think their children can not wear contacts safely. It is true that young kids are dissuaded from wearing contact lenses just for cosmetic reasons. And all contacts must be prescribed by an eye doctor. But following proper procedures, children at all ages can wear contact safely even if sometimes help from parents in lens insertion or removal is needed.

Another common concern among parents is associated with scissors that they believe that running with these devices is the leading cause of eye injury in children. According to statistics from the National Eye Institute, sport and recreational evens account for approximately 59% of pediatric eye injuries. Baseball and basketball are the most dangerous sports. Children who play these contact sports are strongly encouraged to wear protective eyeglasses.

Some parents think that it is impossible to put sunglasses on their children. They usually give up this effort if their kids are reluctant to wear sunglasses. The fact is that UV protection from sunglasses is much more necessary for kids than adults, because children’s eyes allow as high as 70% more UV rays to reach the retina.

preschool children can be fine-tuning the vision when they master the complex hand-eye coordination. They can ride bicycles in right direction they want to go while dealing with pedal and steer. For some old preschoolers, they also play more sophisticated sports. Though preschool children who have already developed their vision during infant and toddle years, they are vulnerable to vision problems if they don’t correct some bad habits.

You should make sure whether your children have the following refractive errors. Your kids may be used to sit too close to the TV and sometimes they just close one eye to watch. Some children prefer reading at close range, which can also lead to nearsightedness. Behaviors like squinting and tilting the head to see better are warning signs. Excessive tearing and light sensitivity are warning signs as well. Encountered any of these above situations, it is essential to schedule an appointment with your eye care practitioner.

Vision problems such as farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism are very common in preschool children. Excessive farsightedness can lead to strabismus. For severe crossed eye, a surgery is needed. Some untreated strabismus may cause amblyopia and eventually blindness. Nearsightedness and astigmatism also require correction with glasses. They can both lead to blurry vision.

As children’s visual systems are flexible and elastic at the preschool stage, it is very necessary for children to take a complete eye exam before they enter school. Generally, children should receive an eye exam by the age of 6 months if they don’t have some vision problems or some refractive errors according to the American Optometric Association (AOA). If your kids require corrections for nearsightedness, farsightedness or strabismus, you’d better to arrange an exam every year. Annual prescription changes of eyeglasses or contact lenses are very common in children.

Another important aspect is that you should make sure if your children have received a comprehensive eye exam, not only screenings. Sometimes screenings are not administered by eye care practitioners and may not reflect your kids’ eye condition correctly.

After the eye exam of your kids, you also need to encourage them to wear eyeglasses in proper way. You should explain why they need to wear eyeglasses and give some specific example if necessary. When choosing frames, you should respect your kids’ choice. In addition to the better vision, you also need to pay attention to the comfort of frames. Since the result of eye exams may be influenced by physical condition, it is not wise to visit an eye doctor when your kid is tired or hungry.

Kids glasses market is expanding at a rapid speed. As the overwhelming spread of TV and Internet, the number of kids that get myopia is increasing. Of course, kids eyeglasses are not only for vision correction. Sometimes, kids want fashion too. You can find kids glasses in a variety of styles and kid-friendly colors.

There are some factors you should keep in mind while shopping for kids eyeglasses. Polycarbonate lenses are impact-resistant and lightweight so that most of kids glasses are made of them. Scratch-resistant coatings make kids glasses more resistant since kids are mischievous. Kids eyeglasses with this coating usually last a little longer. Silicone nose pads are more softer and comfortable so they often appear in kids glasses. They also have a non-slip surface that makes the glasses stable. Kids eyeglasses should be equipped with spring hinges. These hinges allow the temples to bend outward when putting on the glasses or taking off. This is important because some kids are lazy and always yank off the glasses with a single hand. Since kids grow up quickly, a one-year warranty of kids glasses is enough. But you should ask for a scratch warranty.

The taste of kids towards eyeglasses is significantly influenced by popular characters or childhood icons. Harry Potter, Sponge Bob and Barbie set some fashions for kids glasses. Some trends of kids eyeglasses also exist. Many kids like the classic designs worn by adults, just in different scale. Branded or licensed kids glasses are becoming popular. Kids sunglasses are useful to protect kids’ eyes from harmful rays.
